What do you want to be when you grow up?
I’ve been working diligently to answer this question for myself. It’s not that I was unhappy or unfulfilled or that I looked back on my life with regret; it’s that I was lacking a sense of purpose and significance. I felt like there was something I was supposed to be doing, but I was clueless to what that was. It is not for lack of trying!
In the years since graduating college I have been a newspaper reporter, a secretary, a marketing manager, a public relations manager, a real estate agent and now an at-home mom. There are many things I love about each of those jobs, but none of them entirely fit the bill for me.
A few years back when I started to solve this mystery I read several books on finding your passion, I surfed the internet for those tests that match you with your ‘perfect’ job and talked to several people whom know me well enough to give wise advice on my future.
I was shocked at my findings.
I realized it’s NOT ALL ABOUT ME! The fact is that I’m not alive to fulfill Meg’s list of to do’s and gather as much stuff as I can possibly attain. (WHAT?) I was made to worship and be in relationship with God and serve others with the gifts He gave me.
Well, isn’t that enough to knock your socks off??!!! It did mine!
So, I went about making a list of the gifts and talents I naturally have (pretty easy…I like to sing, write and talk). Then I started trying to figure out what to do with them (not so easy…I didn’t have the slightest idea).
Obviously, if you are you already working in your dream job (whether it be in the workplace or at home) and living a life that you feel is complete and significant than you are to be complimented!!!! WOOHOO! Great job!
However, I think many people are like me and don’t necessarily wake up every morning ready to tackle the day and all that it might have to offer.
Unfortunately, I spent many days sliding down a path with a hope that something grand would happen to me. (Sounds dumb now, but OH, so true!!)
I never dreamed there was so much more just for me!!! I sold myself short for a long time and settled for what seemed to be the easiest path, made the most money or what someone else told me was the best course for me to take.
This is not what God had planned for me! He wants SO much more! He wants me to use the talents I have for His purposes and He is the One that helps me figure it out!!!
“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10)
The path to finding your passion is not always an easy one. Plus, once you find it…you then really should do something about it. Of course, there are those of us who fight tooth and nail against going the direction that you know in your heart you need to go because you are afraid of failing, being laughed at, or down-right not good enough.
The point is that you and I are here for a reason. We all have talents and we all need to use them for the sake of others.
What are your talents? Are you using them for yourself or others?
I’m finally headed in the right direction and I am still not exactly sure what the outcome will be, but I’m willing to trust God with my life and ask Him for the map. (I need the route to be highlighted, please)
