So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12
The topic today was supposed to be about understanding, but since I have absolutely no understanding of anything at the moment, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss what we do in the meantime.
Don’t know about you, but I waste a TON of time. And I can’t even tell you what happens to it. I’m sure some of it goes to good causes, but most goes into the nothingness pile…well, okay, more than most!
It is no secret that we each get a certain number of days in our lifetime and we have the opportunity to make the best of each moment or squander the years away.
Every day has 24 hours…what are we doing with them?
Are we wallowing in self-pity? Down in the dumps? Wandering aimlessly and hoping for a miracle?
Tim McGraw encourages quality time management for our lives in a song, “Someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying like tomorrow was a gift and you’ve got eternity to think about what you’d do with it? What could you do with it? What did I do with it? What would I do with it?”
These song lyrics definitely make me stop and think about being deliberate in my planning, scheduling and executing of each second.
To be honest, the reason “quality time” became the topic today is twofold.
First of all, I’m going this weekend to celebrate the life on earth of my dear friend, Susan. Her days were few and it forces those of us close to her to realize that death will come for all of us some day.
The question is – will we have completed our tasks to the best of our abilities when the time comes? Or at the very least, are we using our time on earth wisely? Will we have affected those around us positively? And most of all…will our lives have meant something?
The second reason ‘quality time’ made today’s topic is because I recently read a Girlfriends in God devotional by Mary Sutherland about “The Battle for Balance”.
According to Mary, “The reality for each one of us is that every moment of every day is focused on someone or something. We either set the focus through which we live and view life or we allow it to be set for us. A balanced life is focused on God as a result of sitting at His feet.”
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Galatians 6:7-8
Our time here on earth is limited, but we all have choices to make regarding what we will do with it.
Some of us are like the person who doesn’t want to go to college because it takes too long…five years later, they are still complaining about being in the same place, when we all know that they could have that diploma instead.
The truth is that we will never live a Godly life and reap the benefits of His peace unless we spend quality time day after day with Him. Saying ‘grace’ at the dinner table isn’t enough.
Changing our ways and placing our trust in God takes time. In fact, it takes careful planning, scheduling and DOING quality time with Him.
God wants to lead us through a life of quality, but we won’t be able to follow His lead if we don’t get to know His voice, His signs and His way.
Our days are in our hands. So what are you going to do with yours?
Some Wisdom for Today: Proverbs 6:6-8 – Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest.
