The Editor

As a writer I am always looking for an editor.  Sometimes it’s a friend, a sister or my husband.  When I’m really in a pinch…it ends up being me.  Thank God for spell check!

Being my own editor is a bad thing.

It makes no difference how grammatically affluent I am or how many words I know – looking for my own mistakes amid something I’ve created is harder than you might think.

For one, I’ve got the ideas in my head and I know what I’m supposed to be typing into the document, therefore, missing critical punctuation or words (because, in reality, I think they are already there).

Secondly, a sentence might sound correct in my own head, but doesn’t convey the gist behind the words.  Hate it when that happens!!!

I could go on and on about the mistakes I make on a regular basis that are caught by the people I ask to edit my work.  The fact is that these errors, inaccuracies or oversights would never get changed if I was the one in charge of my own editing.

But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world. 1Corinthians 11:31-32

Editors bring great value to a writer.  The editor’s job includes helping a writer brainstorm; planning and organizing thoughts; corrections and revisions; enhancing theme and meaning; researching and checking facts; and making sure all of the writer’s words are concise, correct and cohesive.

Without a good editor, books would not be the same.

Even the most accomplished of authors would produce bland copy with jumbled thoughts and no structure.  The editor takes the mediocre and makes it amazing!

God should be our Editor.

Giving God this job in our lives will produce the masterpiece we are all yearning to create.

God has given us the talents, gifts and creativity.  Our responsibility is to let Him edit our lives and make it His Creation – of course, He created us, but He also gave us the choice to choose Him or not.

I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. John 5:30

If Jesus listened and allowed God to lead Him, shouldn’t we do the same?

When left to our own devices, we will fail every time.  However, asking God to be our Editor will generate righteousness in us that only He can give.

God wants to create that masterpiece in us…will you let Him?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 24:11 – Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.
