We Have Today

Ever since January I’ve had a list of personal, work, home and family goals staring at me from just above my computer desk.  This spreadsheet looms over my head and occasionally taunts me until I look up.  UGH!

If I hadn’t written those 59 goals back at the first of the year like I had a bunch of time on my hands, I wouldn’t feel the pressure today to actually GET SOMETHING DONE!!!  Instead, I’m wondering why I thought I could be so efficient!!

The truth is that I’ve already accomplished 21 of those 59 goals since I wrote them in January.  So, the possibility of completing the others is doable since I wasn’t really focused on the goals over the last several months.  There’s still time because I have today.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15

We may not have tomorrow, but we definitely have today.  It’s our job to make the best of it.

Most of us get bogged down by our list of goals and objectives or we get disillusioned because they change, grow or diminish.  Regardless of what today’s duties morph into, it is still our responsibility to take action from wherever we may be.

It would seem to be easier to just give up and ride the wave of overwhelming proportions, but where will that get us?  Will we have made a difference?  Will we have achieved anything?  Will we be satisfied?

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. –Chinese Proverb

Fear of failure causes many of us to shake in our boots or find ourselves frozen in one place.  In fact, I’ve heard it called analysis to paralysis…and that is spot on!  We tend to be too scared to move forward, yet the worst mistake is not moving at all.

Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears. –Les Brown

I love that quote and sadly, I believe it’s very true! We are so scared we will do something wrong that we do nothing.  Lack of action leads to frustration, anger, despair and depression.

Plus, we will never reach a goal unless we start marking off the steps to get there.  Additionally, if we never write them down and place them in front of our faces, they will definitely never happen.

Yes, I may have 59 goals to complete during 2014 and that might be a little overkill, but I wouldn’t even know to do them if I hadn’t taken the time to come up with them in the first place.  Already, I’m almost half-way there and I still have four and a half months to go!

What do you need to do with the time you have left?  What’s standing in your way?

Some Wisdom for Today:  Proverbs 6:10-11 – A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.
