Have you ever looked at your life and wondered, “What needs to be done?”
More importantly, have you ever scanned the world around you and wondered what it needed and how you could provide for it? Huh. Lord knows I need to do this more often.
My sister, Heather, recently shared this question with me after reading Spiritual Parenting: An Awakening for Today’s Families by Michelle Anthony. I have not read the book, but definitely plan to. In the meantime, I’ve been stuck on the question.
What needs to be done?
The book pertains to helping our children grow up with serving hearts and attitudes. However, I think there are plenty of us adults who could use a crash course in serving others in our community and in the world.
What needs to be done is not a one-time question, nor does it have a right answer, anyway. In fact, we should really ask God to help us get started. Next, we need to open our eyes so we can clearly see what the world needs. And lastly, we have to take ME out of the equation. Oh…that is the hard part!!!
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:4
Heather’s Cliffs Notes version of the book is perfect…
“This simple and profound question will change the way we walk into any room, situation or relationship because it takes away the idea of “it’s all about me” (example: I will clean the dish I just used) and puts the focus on “what needs to be done” (example: I will clean the one dish I just used and all the other dirty dishes in the sink).”
Absolutely LOVE her examples!!!! I am blessed beyond measure to have her as a sister!
Oops! I digress….
Anyway, there are many excuses for us to use in order to get out of the actual DOING of what needs to be done. But, God calls us to rise above the average person and DO for others.
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. 1Timothy 6:17-19
Did you notice that Paul placed ‘good works’ before ‘be generous’? We are called to get off the couch and DO what needs to be done!!!
I can’t believe one question has left such an extraordinary impact on my day!! Must be God nudging me down a path that I don’t yet understand, but I feel the calling and I now have my eyes open to see the way.
It is imperative to remember that it doesn’t matter what others are doing or not doing…it is my responsibility to do what needs to be done because that is what Jesus did!
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
So, I urge you to look around TODAY and see what needs to be done.
Some Wisdom for Today: Proverbs 22:9 – Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.
